Good Faith Estimate

Last Updated: [10/14/25]

As of January 1, 2022, all healthcare providers—including mental-health professionals—are required by the federal No Surprises Act to provide a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) of expected service costs to clients who are not using insurance.

This law was created to ensure transparency and to help you make informed decisions about your care.

Your Rights

If you are a self-pay client (not using insurance, or receiving services not covered by insurance), you have the right to:

  • Receive a written estimate of the total expected charges for services.

  • Request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling, or at any time during treatment.

  • Dispute a bill that exceeds your estimate by more than $400 without prior agreement.

How It Works

Before starting therapy, you will receive a written estimate that includes:

  • The type of service (individual therapy, couples therapy, etc.).

  • The session fee and estimated frequency (for example, weekly or bi-weekly).

  • The total estimated cost over a defined period (for example, 3 months or 12 months).

Your actual cost may vary depending on the length of therapy, changes in frequency, or additional requested services (such as yoga integration or astrology-informed sessions).

Sample Estimate

If your session rate is $200 and you attend weekly therapy for 12 months, your total annual estimate would be:
$200 × 52 sessions = $10,400.

If you attend bi-weekly sessions, the annual estimate would be approximately $5,200.

Insurance & Sliding Scale

If you use insurance through Headway (Aetna, Cigna, UHC, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and others), the cost of sessions will depend on your plan’s copay or coinsurance rate.
If you are paying privately, a sliding-scale option may be available based on financial need.

Dispute Resolution

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute it.
